New trade agreement opens important markets: Canadian Chamber

Nov. 23, 2017 –  Canadian business stands to gain significantly from a new Pacific trade agreement, says the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

“This Comprehensive and Progressive Pacific Trade Agreement will help Canada consolidate trade relations with 10 global partners in key markets. The agreement, even if in principle, is good news for Canadian companies that want to expand into this vibrant region,” said the Hon. Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Chamber. “This announcement comes at a crucial time when Canada needs to diversify its export markets, because we can no longer rely on traditional trade partners.”

Although few of the details are currently known and that the specifics of the agreement will need to be evaluated, the Chamber supports a comprehensive, well-executed agreement that benefits all sectors of the Canadian economy.

“Now that the CETA deal is in place with Europe, this new agreement will put Canada in the highly enviable position of having trade agreements with the largest markets to the east, and to the west. In addition, it will remove barriers for Canadian businesses to access to the fastest growing markets in the world,” said Mr. Beatty.

“If properly implemented, this agreement will give our business access to hundreds of consumers in Asia-Pacific while attracting greater foreign investment here at home. We are thrilled to be on board as Canada sets out on this global opportunity, and we congratulate government on reaching this important milestone,” Mr. Beatty concluded.
